Your hometown newspapers take home NYPA Awards

The Long Island Advance and Suffolk County News were recently recognized during the Better Newspaper Contest Awards, hosted by the New York Press Association at their annual conference. The publications brought home five awards.

Executive Editor Nicole Fuentes won first place for her coverage of Health, Healthcare and Science during the

COVID-19 pandemic. The Long Island Advance team, under the direction of Fuentes and reporters including Sam Desmond, took home a third-place award for best Special Section on Newsprint for their “Unmasked” series, also available for viewing online. Fuentes also won an honorable mention for her “Snow Day” photo spread.

Suffolk County News photographer Ryan Sweezey won a first-place award for Best Art Photo for his shot at Brookwood Park and the team, including Fuentes, Desmond, Sweezey and contributing writer Linda Leuzzi, also took home a second-place award for Best Front Pages.
