Pat-Med celebrates the Class of 2020 with a drive-in graduation

Posted

On the evening of Thursday, June 25, the Patchogue-Medford School District held their 2020 graduation ceremony drive-in style. Vehicles with seniors, their families and friends filled the high school parking lot, side by side, as they watched from a big movie screen and listened through FM radio.

Despite the far-from-normal ceremony, normalities like speeches and videos were shared. A rainbow also appeared after a small rain shower and students were then directed, six feet apart in masks, to walk to the stage, one by one. The ceremony was accompanied by honking instead of applause and ended with fireworks.

Not knowing how to address the Class of 2020 at first, superintendent of schools Dr. Donna Jones described them as Generation Z: Zoomers able to take head-on any challenge that comes.

“There is no comparison in modern-day history to what our Class of 2020 has just lived through,” she added, wishing them bright futures.
