Despite the wind and the rain, the holiday spirit and school spirit within Islip High School never dwindled. On Friday, Dec. 1, the Islip High School PTSA hosted a Holiday Shopping Night.

With 24 days left before Christmas, it was a great opportunity to shop while supporting local vendors and Islip High School students.

In the high school cafeteria, vendors were selling all kinds of items. A few vendors sold clothing and accessories, and some sold baked goods such as cheesecake. Others sold handmade decor such as signs and candles. Some sellers offered customization on the spot. Most of the vendors were adults. However, there were exceptions. Five young ladies sold handmade earrings and bracelets. Each vendor provided a prize, which would be part of a raffle. Also in the cafeteria were Tri-M Music Honor Society students, who performed holiday tunes.

Another area adjacent to the cafeteria was bustling with Islip High School students serving baked goods, adding tinsel to people’s hair, and more. In the room stood an oversized white couch, where Santa Claus would eventually sit for pictures. Next to it was the Islip High School PTSA table. Vice president Jean DeLucca was selling raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets.

DeLucca said that this is their biggest fundraiser of the year. The money raised goes towards scholarships for graduating seniors. Funds are also used to sponsor special programs for all grades.

She also mentioned that they had Dr. Dewey speak to the 10th-grade class about drug addiction and how it impacts the brain. The Islip High School PTSA also does “P.S. I Love You Day,” where they come to the school and write special messages for the students. “P.S. I Love You Day” helps spread awareness for mental health, teaches students to spread love, and ensures that everyone feels that they have someone who cares throughout the year.
