Village of Patchogue board voted on Dec. 9 to spend up to $1.35 million to renovate one of the softball fields at Waldbauer Field Complex on Rider Avenue.
The village is hiring The Landtek Group, which is based in Bay Shore, to renovate the field known as the “90-foot field.”
The plan is to replace the grass infield with turf, keep the outfield as grass and install lights, said Joseph Keyes, a village board member and commissioner of Parks and Recreation. The lights are designed so they only illuminate the field and don’t shine into nearby homes, Keyes said.
Keyes said he’s hoping the field can be ready by spring.
“We’re optimistic for a spring opening,” he said.
The idea is that the softball teams that currently use the field at Shorefront Park would use the renovated Waldbauer field instead, Keyes said.
The Shorefront Park field, which takes a beating because it is on the water, could be used for sandlot baseball games or for events that would otherwise be held on Main Street, such as car shows.
“The location right off the bay makes it difficult to maintain,” Keyes said of the Shorefront Park field.
The village previously hired Landtek Group to build the Little League field at Rider Avenue Park and the mini-soccer field behind the Parks and Recreation Department at 380 Bay Avenue, which was completed in 2023.
