Although summer doesn’t officially kick off till mid-June, it’s fair to say that after a weekend with temperatures in the 80s, the South Shore is on its way to summer.
Earlier this year, many local events set for this summer seemed up in the air due to the pandemic. Luckily, Patchogue, Medford, Bellport and other municipalities have managed to line up plenty of safe events through-
out the season so community members can have some fun. Check out some of the local summer happenings below.
BELLPORT Gateway Playhouse
Gateway has announced its 2021 sea- son will resume this summer. The the- ater will open at a reduced capacity and with extra safety measures in place. As it stands, Gateway is expected to ramp up capacity and aims to be at full capacity by the end of summer. This season’s shows include: “Songs For A New World” from July 14 to 31; “Million Dollar Quartet” from Aug. 4 to 21; “Newsies” from Aug. 25 to Sept. 11; “A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder” from Nov. 17 to Dec. 4; and “Holiday Spectacular On Ice” from Dec. 17 to Jan. 1, 2022.
Artists on the Lane
South Bay Art Association will host the 63rd annual Artists on the Lane fine art festival on Sunday, July 4 in Bellport Village. Artists on the Lane features a variety of juried work by artists and artisans including paintings, ceramics and pottery, photography, fiber art, glass art, artisan jewelry and more.
Bellport Garden Club annual plant sale
The Garden Club will have its annual plant sale on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event also serves as the Pilot Club of Patchogue’s fifth annu- al craft and vendor fair. The profits will
benefit the Beautification Fund, which enables the Garden Club to decorate the window boxes and trees in Bellport Vil- lage. A rain date is scheduled for June 19.
The Gallery at Marquee Projects
The gallery’s latest exhibit, “No Body Like This Body,” will run in Bellport Village to June 27. The group exhibition features the work of Heather Benjamin, Deborah Buck, Kevin Ford, Bel Fullana, Hugo Guinness, Clarity Haynes, Adam Lowenbein, Wyatt Mills, Daniel Morow- itz, Valiente Pastel, Hunter Potter, Gary Schneider and Vahid Sharifian.
PATCHOGUE VILLAGE
Patchogue Fire Department’s Outdoor Movie Night Patchogue Fire Department Engine Co. 1 will be presenting an outdoor movie night on Saturday, June 19 at 8 p.m. “Ice Age: Continental Drift” will be shown on an outdoor screen. Entry costs $12 per person, and a food truck will be on site. Attendees can sign up with Eventbrite, send money via Venmo tp @EngineCom- panyPFD, or pay at the event.
Meet on Main (tentative)
The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce aims to repurpose the Alive After Five dates originally scheduled for July 8, 22, and Aug. 5 and 19 to host Meet on Main, a series of family-oriented fun nights. The first date of the season is likely to feature mostly on-street dining with some additions, including music and art. However, the schedule is tenta- tive.
Goat yoga and meditations
The Parks Department will offer goat yoga for ages 12 and older with dates in July and August for $15 per class, and singing bowl meditations will be offered from July 17 to Aug. 21. Yoga on the beach and the fitness boot camp will return with a six-week program starting July 17. Sailing lessons will also return for ages 7-16 beginning June 28 for begin- ners, intermediate and advanced.
Beach Club Pool
The Parks Department will open its Beach Club and pool on Sunday, June 27, and will be open through Labor Day between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m Monday through Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday, and from Aug. 16 through Sept. 6. Season passes range from $50 to $80 with daily admission at $3 to $5. Summer swim lessons will also be available, with limited time slots every half-hour for three-week sessions as well as lifeguard lessons.
Patchogue Theatre: The Beatles ‘White Album’ live
A Beatles cover band for decades, The Moondogs will return to cover the entire “White Album” on Sept. 24. In 2019, the group performed live renditions of “Let It Be” and “Abbey Road.”
Shorefront Park Concert Series (tentative)
The summer concert series is expected to resume with That 70s Band on Aug. 7, Amber Ferrari on Aug. 14 and Kids Dance Party on Aug. 27. Those dates are tentative and have not yet been finalized.
MEDFORD
Medford Memorial Park Summer Concert Series (tentative)
Scheduled tentatively for Wednesdays, Aug. 11 and 25 and Friday, Sept. 10. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and other items needed to enjoy the night out. There will not be any refreshments served, although an ice cream truck is known to show up and Carvel is nearby. Concerts start at 7 p.m. at the county stage.
SHIRLEY
Smith Point County Park Drive-in Movie Series
With assistance from the Reclaim Our Water initiative, New York State Department of Environmental Conser- vation, the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan and Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center, Suffolk County will present the drive-in series. Classics like “Back to the Future,” “The Goonies” and “Clueless” will be presented. The gates open at 7 p.m., screenings start at 8 p.m. The movie series concludes in August. Tickets must be purchased through Eventbrite and can be found on the county website. One ticket represents one car entry.
