After two years of trying to sell the building, the South Country Library officially sold the Bellport Post office building located at 26 Station Road for a total of $1.1 million.
Postal Realty Trust, the purchasers of the building, according to library director Kristina Sembler, will be maintaining post office operations at the building.
“We wanted to make sure the post office was going to remain a post office when we looked to sell it,” she said of the board’s decision also noting that it is not typical of a public library to be landlords to a post office.
As far as the proceeds of the sale, she said, the money will be set aside to eventually make upgrades to the library building including new flooring, roofing and an HVAC system as well as a complete interior space renovation.
“We have an old building without any renovations,” she said. “We also didn’t want to raise taxes.”
Though the library has not yet received an estimate or bid for the library project, they are in the beginning stages of the renovation and plan to have the project started within the next two years.
“The money will be committed to the project at a future board meeting,” Sembler promised.
Neither the sale of the building or the commitment to the library project, she added, requires a taxpayer vote.
