SEPA Mujer rolls out second leadership workshop series this week

Posted

To further improve the bond between Latino women and their communities, SEPA Mujer has unveiled the second level of its leadership workshop.

The nonprofit group, now based in Patchogue, will start up the second level of their Civic Engagement and Leadership Development Trainings on Saturday, May 29. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Saturday at the same time until June 26.

The 5-week, 25 hour course, also known as “Talleres de Liderazgo”, is conducted entirely in Spanish and is intended to offer a space for Latina immigrant women and girls.

The training manual is designed to engage local Latina immigrant women with advocacy tools and skills, concentrating on the fundamentals of civic engagement, the legislative process, community leadership, and community organizing. The training also prepares participants to be more actively engaged in local grassroots campaigns and community projects.

Topics include the legislative process in the U.S., U.S. Immigration history and studying the Declaration of Human Rights, and more. The courses help women navigate educational opportunities and the government system on Long Island.

The new secondary series can only be completed if the first 25-hour course is completed.

Individuals who complete all training are expected to receive a certificate of completion from SEPA Mujer and from local legislators who are invited to participate at a closing ceremony.

Nonprofit SEPA Mujer has worked to support immigrant women on Long Island since 1993. According to its website it does so “by bringing together community members and advocates to speak out against injustice, provide access to opportunities and services, take a stand against domestic violence and other abuses, and push for social change. We work with individuals and in partnerships with other organizations (immigrant rights, civil rights, and domestic violence based).”
