In varsity girls flag football, the Sayville Golden Flashes jousted the Elwood-John Glenn Knights for their home opener on Monday, March 31, at Timothy J. Henck Field on a chilly afternoon in Sayville.

The Flashes looked golden on their opening drive as Ava Vadyak reeled in four catches from her signal caller, Olivia Moynihan, culminating the drive with a touchdown toss to Vadyak for six points.

Later in the first half, Moynihan flung a touchdown pass to Trinity Ricevuto with 9:24 left in the opening period; then Vadyak made a reception for the extra point and it was 13-0.

With 48 seconds until halftime, Moynihan found Vadyak in the end zone again and it was 19-0. Vadyak shimmered on the defensive side of the ball as well, making an interception with 17 seconds till halftime to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Elwood-John Glenn got back into the game when Nicole Savitsky made a touchdown reception and converted the extra point, and it was 19-7 Sayville.

With 16:49 remaining on fourth down and two from the two, Moynihan threw a dart to Vadyak for the duo’s triadic TD on the afternoon, and it was 26-7.

Afterwards, on fourth and four, Moynihan found Aniela Marino in the end zone and Sayville was pouring it on with 32 points. In the waning minutes, Sayville played sturdy defense.
