Sayville and Garden City faced each other last Saturday at Stony Brook University for the Division III Long Island championship.
Both teams came in at 11-0 looking to put the finishing touches on a perfect season. The week prior, the Golden Flashes defeated Half Hollow Hills West while the Garden City Trojans beat Manhasset to win their respective county titles.
On the opening drive of the game, Sayville drove the ball down to the Trojans three-yard line and attempted a field goal, but it was blocked by Garden City.
In the second quarter, Garden City commenced the scoring when Brayden Robertiello threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Blake Cascadden with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter. Shortly after, the Trojans tacked on more points after a 26-yard touchdown run by Blake Cascadden and it was 14-0 Garden City.
The Trojans nailed a 39-yard field goal just as time elapsed in the first half and it was 17-0 at the intermission. Sayville got on the board in the third when Patrick Coan threw a 14-yard touchdown toss to Tomas McCann, ensued by an extra point by Nick Watson and it was 17-7.
The Trojans again made it a two-possession game when Robertiello threw another touchdown pass. It was a 45-yard catch and run for Owen Wuchte with a little over two minutes to go in the third. Just prior to the end of the third period, Coan found McCann again in the end zone to trim the deficit for a 26-yard touchdown strike and followed by a Watson extra point, it was 24-14 Garden City.
In the final quarter on 4th and 11, Coan found Kyle Messina wide open, and Messina took it to the house for a 44-yard catch and run that culminated in the end zone, followed by a Nick Watson extra point and it was 24-21 Trojans with eight minutes remaining.
With 4:10 to go, Garden City padded their lead after an eight-yard touchdown toss by Robertiello and they led 31-21. Afterwards, with 2:49 remaining, Sayville came closer once again when Coan heaved an eight-yard pass that Messina snared in the end zone for six points and after Watson kicked it through the uprights, it was 31-28.
That score was upheld after Garden City got the ball back and made a first down to move the chains and the clock, and the Trojans defeated the Golden Flashes 31-28 in the Long Island Championship.
It was the fourth consecutive Long Island championship for Garden City and their 54th consecutive win as Garden City has not lost a game since 2019.
