Sandspit to get new bulkhead

The Sandspit Marina bulkhead, that runs from the pier to the jetty, is about to be replaced.

According to Brookhaven’s Parks Department, several hundred feet of new vinyl sheets will be installed beginning mid-April. In addition to protection from damage caused by erosion, the bulkhead will accommodate those wishing to fish or crab.

The old bulkhead is estimated to be 20-plus years old.

“The 5th Council District represents the southern coastline, so we have to replace bulkheads to keep our constituency safe,” said councilman Neil Foley, who sponsored the bulkhead renovation resolution.

“We’re also fixing and renovating the bulkhead at the Blue Point Fishing Pier.”

Mayor Paul Pontieri discussed the comforting presence of having a place like Sandspit for people to just take a break and look at the water.

“I grew up on Cedar Avenue that leads to Sandspit,” he said. “It’s about the crabbing and fishing, but also people like myself who deal with cell phones. It’s a great place to come down and sit and relax. A lot of people drive down in the morning to read the paper and drink coffee. If you’re a South Shore person, you’re drawn to making your way down to Sandspit and Mascot docks. The fact that the town improves it indicates they think so, also. What it tells the community is that there’s a value to it and people take advantage of it. I know I do.”
