Republicans in Suffolk County came out in droves on Election Day, taking over the majority of the 18-seat Suffolk County Legislature and flipping the District Attorney’s Office.

Republicans gathered to watch results and celebrate victories at Stereo Garden in Patchogue, where the mood was jubilant as the results came in.

Incumbent Steve Flotteron of the 11th Legislative District defeated Democratic challenger Astrid Fidelia with almost 72 percent of the vote for his third term. Flotteron received 10,516 votes while Fidelia received 4,136.

Trish Bergin, who currently sits on the Islip Town Council, defeated Carla Simpson with 67 percent of the vote to take over Tom Cilmi’s seat in the 10th Legislative District after Cilmi was term-limited. Bergin received 10,008 votes while Simpson received 4,855.

Republican Ray Tierney defeated incumbent Tim Sini for district attorney.
“I am proud and humbled to stand before you here today and because of the people in this room and the people in Suffolk County, despite running against an incumbent, despite not having a lot of money in the beginning, despite not having the support of a lot of institutions, not for one day did I feel like an underdog because of you guys,” Tierney said in his victory speech.

“I will fight every day to keep the citizens of Suffolk County safe. I will be fair and I will reach out into the community to develop relationships so we can all have faith in our District Attorney’s Office.”

Tierney received 57 percent of the vote with over 153,000 votes while Sini received 42 percent with 114,514.Islip Town councilman James P. O’Connor defeated Democratic challenger Darrin Green with just under 70 percent of the vote to keep his seat in the 2nd council district.

Andrew Wittman defeated Democratic challenger Donovon Currey with almost 65 percent of the vote to become the new Town of Islip receiver of taxes.
Manny Troche was defeated by Jorge Guadrón for the newly redistricted Islip Town Council District 1.
