29th consecutive win for football team

The Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms won 12-7 against the undefeated Babylon Panthers for the 29th consecutive win in the past three years.

“The defense really stepped up. We faced a team that was scoring on average 34 points a game,” said Phantoms head coach Michael Zafonte. “The defense held then for seven and Coach Gentile, the defensive coordinator, did an amazing job preparing the team.”

The defense scored on a strip sack recovery for a touchdown, with a huge interception at end of game to set the offense up to drive down the field and then take a knee.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we worked really hard in practice this week and it paid off. Our coaches made sure everyone’s effort was there in practice, which led to it being there for the game. I thought it was a great team win,” said outside linebacker Brendan Mattimore.

“The win on Friday was a true ‘team effort.’ There is an old adage in sports that good teams find a way to win, and this held true for us  in this particular  game. Babylon is a very talented, well-coached and tough football team and has one of the most prolific payers in Division IV leading them.  I am sure they will make a deep run into the playoffs and wouldn’t be surprised if our paths crossed again at some juncture,” said Tim Mullins, athletics director for BBP.
