Over 500 runners at historical 5K

On Monday, July 4, the Oakdale Firecracker 5K was held at the historical site of the Bourne Mansion and hosted over 550 runners on a bright holiday.

There were over 320 registered participants by Friday before the race, and the perfect summer weather brought in over 200 more runners.

David Chan, who spearheaded the 5K as chairman, was honored at the amazing turnout and ran the race himself.

Public officials Legis. Anthony Piccirillo (R-8th District) and State Sen. Alexis Weik (R-3rd District) were on hand to commend Chan and the Oakdale Historical Society for a job well done.

The race timing was conducted by Sayville Running Company, and owner Brendan Barrett came in third place for the men’s division.

Proceeds for the race will go to benefit St. John’s Church in Oakdale, a historical house of worship dating back to the Town of Islip’s colonial history.

The church’s windows, which include original colonial period glass as well as stained glass from a Brooklyn church that are from France, are in need of TLC.
