Town operations continue after pipe bursts

Brookhaven Town Hall suffered an unfortunate pipe burst over the weekend which flooded the third-floor unit call center and even made its way down to the main floor lobby.

“We had a huge pipe burst over the weekend, it fried some of the computers, but we had a good, dry run working from home in the pandemic,” Town supervisor Ed Romaine said of the call center employee’s ability to get up and running without missing a call ahead of the storm on Sunday night.

Thankfully, the historian’s office was recently moved from that section of the building; a lot of records would have been lost if it hadn’t, Romaine added.

After the flood, some computers were wet, as was the flooring. The town emergency hired a company to remediate the situation. Town employees were then able to move necessary computers to an IT closet, so not a single call was missed by morning.

Romaine issued a State of Emergency in the Town of Brookhaven effective Sunday, Jan. 31 until Tuesday Feb. 2 related to the weather.

Vehicles that were parked in the street were instructed to be moved to driveways or they could be subject to towing at the owner’s expense.

Residents were urged to stay off the roads unless there is an emergency or if it is absolutely essential to travel. Monday and Tuesday garbage pick-up was also canceled.
