In a memo by Sayville Schools Superimtendent, Dr. Stimmel, as of Tuesday, January 25, masks will be optional in the school district, at least for the beginning of the school day.
"As of this memo, masks will be optional at the start of the school day tomorrow." The email, sent out parents at 11 pm Monday, January 24 read.
The change in policy is due to the recent court ruling.
Judge Rademaker ruled that Governor Hochul and the NYS Department of Health lack the authority to enforce the mask mandate for schools.
The District was informed that actions will be taken by the Governor and the Commissioner of Education to reinstate the mandate no later than tomorrow morning.
However, until such a time as the Governor takes the necessary legal action to stay the court's decision, there is no authority to require that masks be worn in school.
