Splash pad completed in time for the summer

The Village of Patchogue’s splash pad is finally opening during the Beach Club pool’s regularly scheduled opening on Saturday, June 29 at 11 a.m. The splash pad is located between the existing pool and Maiden Lane on the fenced-in village property.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun—it’s a real asset to the pool,” mayor Paul Pontieri said of the new amenity being specifically for the children in the village. “It’s part of the whole plan to take care of the residents. It looks great and feels great.”

The design, according to parks and recreation director Maria Giustizia, includes everything they wanted, such as the 5-foot clear deck space around the spray pad. A section of the pad, trustee Joe Keyes noted, was designed for smaller kids while the other end consists of taller features for bigger kids.

The entire area is fenced in and the deck area abuts, as a continuation of the pool deck. The project also includes a state-of-the-art treatment tank and recirculating system.

“We are extremely excited the splash pad is finally completed. It’s been tested and it’s working; he just can’t wait to bring all the joy to the kids in the entire community,” said Keyes of the “long-overdue” opening.

The cost to enter the splash pad will be included in the cost to enter the pool, which has both resident and nonresident fees as well as a yearly pass.

The overall cost of the project came in slightly over budget in the amount of $775,000; however, it was at no cost to the taxpayer and covered by a parks grant.

Last year, Patchogue Village officials anticipated an opening for the summer seasons; however, the splash pad hit a few snags with permitting, which caused it to open the following season.

“It’s wonderful. It took a little longer than we wanted and cost a bit more than we hoped, but at the end of the day it was totally worth it,” BID executive director Dennis Smith said. “It met all our expectations. The kids are going to have a great time with it. I can’t wait to see all the exuberant children playing on it.”
