On Wednesday, September 21, state Sen. Alexis Weik (R-3rd District) presented the Oakdale Historical Society president, Maryann Almes, with a New York State Senate Empire Award for their organization’s outstanding devotion to the community.
Each year, the New York State Senate gives special recognition to New Yorkers who have contributed significantly to their communities in the areas of community involvement, leadership, local business, public service, military service, and acts of bravery and heroism.
Oakdale Historical Society has continued to build on the enthusiasm of the Oakdale community. This past year the organization drew in over 500 runners, some from out of state, to participate in the ‘Firecracker 5K Run/Walk’ on July 4 as a fundraiser for new, historically accurate windows at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oakdale.
Local businesses and individuals also sponsored the event. Other annual events like, Blessing of the Animals, March of the Scarecrows Contest and the Civil War Christmas help the society to continue to build a following in the community.
“We have had the pleasure of showcasing musical groups from Connetquot Schools that attract young people and their families to our organization and raise awareness of our history,” said Almes.
Weik presented OHS with the award and spoke of the organization’s achievements.
“This is truly an award for the entire Oakdale community. For it is our shared love of our history, our historic buildings and structures and those who came before us that keeps us all together and makes OHS the wonderful organization that it is. We are honored to accept it on behalf of all our members,” said Almes.
