A close South Shore showdown in girls varsity basketball between Bayport-Blue Point and home team Sayville on Tuesday, Jan. 28, ended in a victory for the Golden Flashes with a final score of 41-38.
The hard-fought final score included a 12-point comeback from the Phantoms in the fourth quarter that left only a point between the two teams.
“When you’re down 12 and you keep showing up, giving it all to every possession, you can live with the results,” said coach Toni McKinnon for Bayport-Blue Point.
With 29 personal fouls, 20 on Sayville and nine on Bayport-Blue Point, free-throws played a large role in the close match, along with two strategic three-pointers from Ava Meyn in the first half of the fourth.
“When things didn’t go our way tonight, I thought our younger players stepped up. Freshman Samantha Carmody and sophomores Aniela Marino and Molly Moynihan were our glue tonight, making big plays when it mattered,” said coach Casey Travers for Sayville.
“We have always coached our players on never giving up. If you give everything, you can live with the results, and I appreciate that the girls gave it all they had,” said McKinnon.
