EJ Autism Jigsaw Run returns to East Islip marina

‘Largest spring running race on Long Island’

When East Islip resident Bea Huste-Petersen learned that her sons Jack and Eric had autism nearly 20 years ago, she did not know what to make of it. At the time, the developmental disorder was not as understood or universally known. In fact, only about 1 in 150 children were diagnosed with the developmental disorder, compared to today’s 1 in 36.

After learning more about autism, Bea and her late husband founded the EJ Autism Foundation — a nonprofit organization honoring their sons — to “fight the mystery” surrounding autism and help local children on the spectrum. By supporting programs and schools on Long Island that currently work with children on the spectrum, EJ Autism Foundation gives kids the tools they need to be successful, without any red tape or barriers. From small endeavors, like donating pizza to a group home for people with disabilities, to donating thousands to school districts, the EJ Autism Foundation fulfills the needs of those with autism in any way possible.

The annual EJ Autism Jigsaw Run, which raises funds for the foundation, will be returning for its 19th appearance on April 28 at 9:30 a.m. The four-mile rain or shine run/walk is held at the East Islip Marina Park, located at 333 Bayview Avenue, with a scenic start and finish on the Great South Bay.

“For the past couple of years, it has been the largest spring running race on Long Island because it has that feeling, that ‘I know why I am here’ feeling,” explained Huste-Petersen. “We have signs all over the course that give you information about autism. By the time you cross the finish line, you are going to know a fact or two that you did not know before you started.”

Participants can register for the 4 Mile Run/Walk for $25, or $30 on the day of the race. Children 14 and under can register to participate in the 1 / 4 Mile Kiddie Run, which costs $5. All EJ Autism Jigsaw registrants are also eligible to participate in The John McGorry Irish Mile (1.27 mile).

Participants can anticipate a one-of-a-kind race T-shirt and post event amenities galore. Immediately following the race, an after party will be held at Jackson Hall in East Islip, featuring live music, raffles, and the announcing and awarding of winners. Join in the collective resonance and participate in the Jigsaw Run/Walk by registering at https://events.elitefeats.com/24ej.
