It was an action-packed game on Friday night when rivals East Islip and Sayville met up for the Suffolk County Division III Championship game at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle stadium.

With 19 seconds left in the game, East Islip’s senior quarterback Derek Burrell got a 31-yard rushing touchdown to give the ecstatic Redmen the championship.

East Islip’s coach Sal Ciampi called Burrell “the greatest single player in East Islip football history.” Burrell finished the night with 178 yards on 20 carries, scoring three touchdowns and completing seven of eight passes for another 116 yards.

Earlier in the fourth, Sayville’s Jack Messina made a dive to the pylon to tie the game up at 28.

The first quarter was action-packed with the Redmen getting on the board first in their first drive with a 1-yard run in by Burrell. The Golden Flashes responded with a touchdown of their own with under five minutes to play in the first. Smalley threw a 17-yard pass to Chad Moccio to tie the game up. Later in the first, Burrell illuded tacklers in a 69-yard touchdown to put East Islip up 14-7. In the last seconds of the quarter, Lopez came up with a huge interception for East Islip.

Less than five minutes into the second quarter, Lopez ran in for a short touchdown to extend the Redmen’s lead to 21-7. Later in the second, Sayville’s Mack Murtha caught a pass one-handed from Smalley to close the gap to a touchdown. Sayville’s Messina then evened up the score at 21 with a 1-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left in the opening half.

In the third quarter, East Islip’s Cooper Parkinson recovered a fumble and went 96 yards for the touchdown to give Islip the 28-21 lead.
