Q: What was your first reaction to the pandemic?

A: “My first reaction actually happened before they called it a pandemic. When it was trending in China, I told my staff that this would be a pandemic. Not because of my background as a chamber president, but as a nurse practitioner... I worked with SuffolkChambers.org and you’ll hear me recommend going to SuffolkChambers.org a lot because they’re updated daily... It was unexpected. We’ve never had this before... My reaction was that we’ve lost our ground. Our footing is misplaced. We’ll have to help one another stay successful.”

Q: What has been the hardest part for the chamber?

A: “The hardest part has been that we haven’t been meeting... We decided that our next meeting will be at the library, where we can do proper social distancing, because now it’s changed from 15 people to 50. There’s a lot of takeaway information from those meetings that people are missing... People love it [the website]; they feel that they haven’t been left behind. They feel that everything they needed was there. So I feel like as a chamber, we did a good job.”

Q: What has been empowering during the lockdown?

A: “Just the sense of so many things that people take for granted, so that when we lose them there’s a sense of panic, conflict... What's been empowering is the way we’ve all been working through it together...the teamwork throughout it has been empowering.

Q: What are your hopes for the chamber in the future?

A: “Our first goal is to be able to meet again, do the social-distance meeting... Our membership continues to grow... the hamlet study was a big thing we got finished... We hope to keep everyone safe; they can go to the website to see where they can get hand sanitizer, masks... Our goal is to grow
the chamber so people can empower each other.”
