The Islip Arts Council Gallery has turned into an animal lover’s dream, with art from the first-ever “Art for Paws” exhibition filling the space. The exhibition, co-hosted by the American Pet Professionals and the Islip Arts Council, features artwork of our beloved four-legged family members. With a total of 88 artworks by 46 artists, the exhibition is a real treat for pet-lovers and artists, and heaven for those who are both.

American Pet Professionals (APP) is a multiple award-winning National Business Networking, Educational, and Multimedia Organization for the pet industry. Members take part in a vibrant network of likeminded, passionate pet pros from all niches of the pet industry, offering each other valuable support and community to help you thrive in your business.

For over 20 years, president and founder of American Pet Professionals Nancy Hassel had dreamed of holding an event to showcase pet art from talented pet artists in the APP.

“Over the years running American Pet Professionals, we have had many incredible pet artists as part of our organization, and always thought this would be a fantastic event to host and feature their talent,” explained Hassel. “But where to host it?”

After having a wonderful experience taking a watercolor class at Islip Art Council in the fall, Hassel knew the Islip Arts Council would be the perfect venue—and the best organization to team up with.

The “Art for Paws”: opening reception was held at the IAC Gallery on Friday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees were offered wine and light fare as they explored the gallery, and the reception shed light on the importance of adopting from local shelters.

“I also want this event to focus on all of the animals in the Islip Animal Shelter, and shelters across the country, because they are all full right now,” Hassel shared with the gathered attendees. “So if you look at all of this beautiful artwork and are thinking about bringing a pet into your life, please consider the Islip Animal Shelter, and maybe you will find the next love of your life has four legs and a furry tail.”

An Islip Animal Shelter booth set up at the reception included a photo book of animals currently available at the shelter, waiting to be adopted. Included in the book were photos of the animals, their temperament, age, weight, and more, allowing reception attendees to get to know the animals at the shelter.

The “Art for Paws” exhibition is running from May 7 through May 30 at the IAC gallery, located in the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore.
