Letters to Santa collected through programs like the USPS reveal that over 500,000 letters were submitted to Santa via New York’s post office asking for a pet for Christmas.
This holiday season, many potential pet owners will be in search of their perfect furry friend. The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center in Central Islip have cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and other animal companions looking for a forever home.
The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center is a shelter for stray or abandoned animals and a temporary home for adoptable pets. In 2021, the modern facility replaced what was once a 58-year-old animal shelter.
The staff and volunteers are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of animals in the Town of Islip by rescuing them from the streets, providing them the care they need, and helping them find loving and permanent homes.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center will host their annual Holiday Pet Toy Drive to bring holiday cheer to the animals waiting for their forever home. Collection bins will be set up in the lobby for easy drop-off. Wish-list items include toys and treats for dogs, cats, and bunnies, collars and leashes, and, most importantly, a home.
The shelter is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the Islip Animal Shelter website to see pets for adoption, schedule a meet-and-greet, volunteer, or donate.
By adopting, you’re not just gaining a forever friend—you’re saving a life and keeping the community safe.
