Voters approve term limits, extensions
Elected officials in the Town of Brookhaven are now subject to term limits - as well as a longer term in office - due to a referendum passed by town voters on Tuesday. The town clerk and tax receiver already serve four-year terms, but the new law makes the term for the town councilmembers, the supervisor and the highway superintendent equal in length. The maximum amount of time an official could serve will be 12 years. Officials are up for reelection in 2019 with the term beginning in 2020 as the first under the new restrictions.
