Canaan Lake draining begins
Suffolk County Legis. Rob Calarco (D-Patchogue) announced that they have officially started to drain Canaan Lake as of May 3, the first day of the Department of Environmental Conservation permit. Since then, over a foot has been drained downstream in small increments. He said it is a slow process being that the DEC allows no more than 2 inches of downstream rise. Work began last summer to install the new culvert under Traction Boulevard, which has allowed the lake to drain by slowly pulling and removing boards. The goal is to lower the lake by about 5 feet and leave it drained throughout the summer for it to dry, to then remove the muck, debris, invasive species and litter. Once completed, he said the lake would then naturally fill itself back up after boards have been replaced. Throughout the process, he said, the county hopes to minimize any odors and utilize the county’s adjacent property as much as possible, using some road ends as necessary.
