Child hospitalized after pit bull attack
A 7-year old girl and her mother were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital last night after being attacked by a pit bull in their Bellport home, police said.
Suffolk County Police said this morning that the child was playing with a male pit bull just after 5 p.m. yesterday when the dog began attacking her. A dog bite resulted in multiple lacerations on her right arm, police said. Her mother was also attacked and bit while trying to get the dog off of her daughter.
A male resident then took a shovel and struck the dog before the dog bit him as well.
When responders arrived to the Bieselin Road home, the dog was found and contained in the backyard.
A Suffolk County Police helicopter transported the mother and daughter to Stony Brook. According to police, the child is suffering serious injuries and the mother suffered non-life threatening injuries. The male resident was transported to Long Island Medical Center by South Country Ambulance in East Patchogue with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the male was dog-sitting the pit bull, who is now in possession of the Town of Brookhaven dog warden.
