Winter storm watch issued for tonight, heavy snow possible


A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service is now in effect from midnight tonight to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 13.

Forecasters are expecting heavy snow, with total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches predicted.

Tuesday morning’s commute is expected to be messy, with reduced visibility and rain changing to snow. North winds tonight will range between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph possible.



Ahead of the storm, Brookhaven Town officials today announced that all recreation centers, senior centers and the Brookhaven Aquatic Center in Mastic will be closed all day tomorrow, March 13.

The Town’s Meals on Wheels program will be suspended on Tuesday and will resume on Wednesday, March 14. The Town’s Jitney Program will also be suspended on Tuesday.

Town garbage pick up scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled. The Tuesday, March 13
Town Board Meeting scheduled for 5:00 pm adjourned and the public hearings will be rescheduled to the
Thursday, March 22 meeting. The Town has also rescheduled the Tuesday Historic District Advisory
Committee Meeting to Wednesday, March 14 at 5:00 pm.

The Federal Courthouse in Central Islip will be closed Tuesday, March 13, due to the incoming storm.

UPDATE: Patchogue-Medford School District, South Country Central School District and William Floyd School District are all closed today due to weather. 

A COMPASS Unity event planned for tonight at the South Country Library has also been canceled.
