The holiday season is a time full of traditions and family

Posted

We all have our own special traditions during this time of the year. Unfortunately, rituals like holiday parades, Christmas markets, and get-togethers are being cancelled as we all work together to save the lives of our neighbors and stop the spread of COVID-19. Here in Patchogue, for example, our Christmas parade down Main Street and holiday boat parade were cancelled due to the pandemic. It is a sacrifice we are all willing to make to keep each other safe, but it can make it feel like a little something is missing. Luckily, there are still many different options to keep the holiday spirit going, even with the restrictions of the pandemic. Light shows and outdoor festivals are a great way to enjoy yourself, and even do some good.

Drive-through light shows are an excellent option to stay safe during this pandemic while still enjoying the magic of this season. It is a family-friendly option for those who want to get out of the house, put on some Christmas music, and enjoy your time with your loved ones. Keeping their 16-year tradition going, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County will be holding their light show at Smith Point in Shirley. Enjoy holiday displays, such as a castle, a holiday feast, the New York skyline, Santa delivering presents, and so much more. The show is open daily starting at 5 p.m. and ending at 10 p.m., until Dec. 30. Tickets are $25 per car at the gate or $22 per car online at www.gssc.us. Proceeds go directly to the Girl Scouts.

The Riverhead Holiday Light Show has returned and is offering more displays that will dazzle your little ones as you drive through 1.5 miles of flickering candles, winter landscapes, snowflake flurries, and even Santa’s workshop. What is special about this light show is that the lights are synchronized to music you can play on your radio. Tickets at the gate or online through their website are $25 per car. The show opens at 5 p.m. and will run for select dates until Dec. 30. Check out riverheadlightshow.com for more information.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum is holding a socially distant, outdoor holiday festival. Every weekend until Dec. 20 they will be featuring holiday lights, themed displays, festive food, music, and holidays characters. For everyone’s safety, all visitors must adhere strictly to all current public health and safety guidelines and practices. Members of the museum are charged $20 for adults and $10 for children. Non-members will be charged $25 for adults and $15 for children. All proceeds go directly to the museum. For more information visit vanderbiltmuseum.org.

This time of the year is so special for all of us. The holiday season is magical, and a time where we are used to getting together with family. This year as we have to postpone some traditions to protect each other, it is good to know there are still some ways to safely celebrate. Light shows are a great way to experience the specialness of the holidays, and even do some good for some great organizations.

Thank you for all you are already doing to keep each other safe and save lives. By making these changes we are all doing our part and helping to stop the spread.
